However, in the ontological mode, we are focused on the essence of simply being. “Ontological” meaning the study of being. When we engage in this mode, we turn our attention inward, reflecting on our experiences and seeking deeper fulfillment, joy, and meaning in life.
I feel it is our job to create space for ourselves to enter fully into the ontological mode. This can be brought about through travel, journaling, yoga or meditation, or a session with a therapist. These activities help us open up to the present moment, allowing us to explore and feel emotions that are often suppressed by the grind.
I also recommend group therapy as a powerful catalyst for deep reflection in the ontological mode. In the supportive environment of a group, we can get helpful feedback from others about how they see us, how we relate to them, and ways we might be self-defeating through unhelpful patterns.
However you choose to enter this mode, taking time to reflect is essential to creating a rich inner life. Sometimes, we must step away from the doing to embrace simply being.
It’s easy to lose ourselves in the everydayness of life. Learning to reconnect with ourselves and marvel at the ever-unfolding present moment can open us up to a more significant experience.
