summer reading recommendations

Summer is where laziness meets respectability”

Top 6 Picks for Summer

Prodigal Summer by Barbara Kingsolver

We are reading this book right now for book club. Kingsolver is masterful in her ability to weave plots, narratives, storylines, and characters together. Here, we join the characters in the heart of Appalachia, where they understand themselves better through the beauty around them. Life is precious because of its ephemeral nature.

Every Summer After by Carley Fortune

As someone who spent childhood summers on Jackson Lake in Georgia, spending time at the lake is always a pleasure. This is a beach read, summer romance, friends-to-lovers, laying on a hammock, and a pink lemonade read.

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

I’m not sure why, but I always read Pride and Prejudice in the summer. I get to spend time in Jane Austen’s world and her language, which is simple, easy, and always compelling. I think Elizabeth Bennett is one of the best female protagonists in literature. Will she find her way to Mr. Darcy?

Wild Game by Adrienne Brodeur

Set on Cape Cod, this is a true story about the complicated nature of mother-daughter relationships. Adrienne is a young girl when she discovers that her magnetic, charismatic mother has a secret no one can know. She holds her mother’s secret in return for the adoring light only her mother can supply.  Of all the books in our nearly ten years of book club, this is the one we reference and discuss most often. If there is a book no one particularly liked, we end up just re-discussing Wild Game.

The Overdue Life of Amy Byler by Kelly Harms

Cute. This book is so charming. It’s always fun to read books about characters who love to read.  Amy is a librarian and avid reader who suddenly gets a summer away to let her hair down and discover her true self.

Life in Five Senses by Gretchen Rubin

A book about how getting out of your head and into your body can transform your experience of life. Summer is a great time to reconnect with yourself and your senses.  It’s about allowing yourself to savor – to taste cold watermelon, feel the splash of the pool, listen to the birds, smell the roses, and truly see the world around you.
